In the May 2012 issue of Stereophile, Robert Deutsch and Art Dudley sought out (and found) sonic improvements via upgrades in fuses made by HiFi Tuning of Germany when used in a PrimaLuna amplifier. Read the article here. This prompted the PrimaLuna design team in The Netherlands to seek out alternatives for use in the PrimaLuna products. In as much as PrimaLuna is renown for using premium parts – including ALPS potentiometers from Japan and Solen capacitors made in France – it seemed purely reasonable to seek possible improvements in fuses provided it could be done at a practical expense, preserving the company’s reputation for excellence AND affordability.
PrimaLuna’s Herman van den Dungen conducted a series of extensive tests with a panel of listeners. The entire line of PrimaLuna components were evaluated. It was found that generic stock fuses typically used by manufacturers were fine, but as a brand, Littelfuse yielded consistent improvements.
In addition, changes in values, while using slow blow fuses, also resulted in improvement in sound. It should be noted that HiFi-Tuning was not included in this study as a $90 fuse was not practical.
So what does all this mean? Starting immediately, all PrimaLuna products will come shipped with Littelfuse brand fuses.
